SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, Pa. (September 16, 2022) … The Kirkwood Family and The historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort are making a major investment that will change things forever at the resort. The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is an iconic golf destination located 75 miles from New York City and 100 miles from Philadelphia.

The year 2022 brings the construction of a Permanent Bridge at Shawnee. This clear span bridge will cross the Wild and Scenic Delaware River to the resort’s championship island Poconos golf course.

“This is a considerable undertaking, and we are looking to complete installation by the end of the year”, said Rob Howell, Resort General Manager.

The idea for a permanent bridge has been 111 years in the making and considered by ownership through countless hardships over the years.  The ultimate election to invest came down to staff and environmental well-being.

Our current seasonal bridge does rest on the riverbed, and high water can affect its stability.  Debris floating downriver gets caught in the legs causing damage to the bridge.  The new permanent bridge spans from the mainland to Shawnee Island having no impact on the natural flow of the river.

Safety protocols, policies, and procedures for installation of the historic wooden bridge are numerous.  Staff is well-trained and we have many team members that have installed the bridge for 20 years or more.   This permanent bridge removes the need to perform this yearly ritual, allowing more focus on course condition and new projects to improve the experiences at our resort.
