Shawnee to Host 12th Annual River Road Cleanup

Monday, February 23, 2015 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) – The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is hosting the 12th Annual River Road Cleanup on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am.  This year, the River Road Cleanup will serve as the kick-off event commemorating the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area’s 5oth Year Anniversary.

The River Road Cleanup is a community cleanup event that has taken place at The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort for 12 years.  Traditionally, about 100 community volunteers gather at The Shawnee Inn once a year to clean River Road of litter from the I-80 Welcome Center in the Delaware Water Gap to the National Park Service Headquarters.  This stretch of River Road spans over 10 miles.

Two years ago, The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort decided to officially adopt River Road.  In doing so, the resort made a commitment to clean River Road of litter twice per calendar year.  The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort was able to adopt River Road through the Keep PA Beautiful adoption program.

“Keeping River Road beautiful and scenic is a pleasure and we are so pleased to contribute to the beautification of Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania,” expressed, Rob Howell, General Manager.  “As with all events hosted at the Shawnee Inn, our River Road Cleanup is perfect for families.  Thanks to our partners at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, who close the stretch of River Road that is located in the national park, we can provide a safe section of the roadway for families with children to clean River Road.  It is the perfect opportunity for children to experience serving the community in a fun, safe and beautiful environment.”

The first 50 volunteers who pre-register for the River Road Cleanup are guaranteed a complimentary 12th Annual River Road Cleanup t-shirt.  The cleanup will be limited to 70 community volunteers in addition to event sponsors and Shawnee Inn staff volunteers.  All volunteers will receive protective gloves and vests.  All children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian.  A volunteer appreciation lunch will be held after the cleanup at The Gem and Keystone Brewpub.

The River Road Cleanup is made possible by The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, which organizes the event and donates food, transportation, a meeting location, and the t-shirt expenses.  The volunteer appreciation lunch is donated by The Gem and Keystone Brewpub.  All garbage bags, gloves and reflective vests are donated by Keep PA Beautiful and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  Recycling bags are donated by The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  Last but not least, the River Road Cleanup is possible because of the hundreds of community volunteers who have made this event a wonderful success year after year.
