Saturday, January 10, 2009 — Delaware River Food and Wine and The Shawnee Gallery invite you to “Torch Songs Over Easy” an exquisite celebration of the romance of the grand resort era featuring the regions best art, music and cuisine. Sunday, February 8, 2009 from 11-1 pm in Shawnee Inn’s Worthington Ballroom.
Guests will enjoy a fashionably “eggs-cellent” brunch by two regional chefs. The event will include special exhibitions by gallery artists, vocalists Kara Snyder and Jordan Lewis accompanied by noted pianist Skip Wilson on the Steinway, a French Press coffee bar by Mary Tellie of Electric City Roasting Co. and a Bloody Mary Bar.
The Food & Drink
Chef “G” Navin from Shawnee Inn’s River Room will be joined by Chef Daniel Rothman of Quality Thyme Creations and Whole Foods Market. The chefs take inspiration from an era when Julia Child’s French cuisine taught a nation how to cook and entertain. “A big upcoming food trend in 2009 is going to be eggs on top of things”, says Alisa Tongg Weiler, Founder of Delaware River Food and Wine. The menu for “Torch Songs Over Easy” will feature different kinds of eggs over a variety of brunch fare with a modern twist. “I look forward to seeing what Chef G and Chef Dan come up with, they assure me that something ‘will go up in flames!'”.
In keeping with Delaware River Food and Wine’s goal to educate people on food and beverage pairings, Mary Tellie, renowned artisan coffee roaster and owner of the Electric City Roasting Company, will provide guided coffee pairings for the different menu items at a special French Press Bar for the event. Electric City Roasting Company participates in Direct Trade Coffee practices, which are considered by those in the industry to be even more “fair” to the coffee growers than Fair Trade.
There will also be an opportunity for guests to express their culinary creativity! The Bloody Mary Bar will allow guests to mix their own concoctions out of an assortment of standard and interesting ingredients.
Delaware River Food and Wine is part of the Weiler Family Foundation (501-c3) and donates all of its profits to local food charities.
The Music
When Christine Griffin, Director of the Shawnee Gallery, found a vintage stack of sheet music in her basement she started concocting a way to share them with the public. “I knew that hearing this music on a grand piano in a beautiful culinary setting could recreate the heyday of the glamorous Pocono Resort culture that the Shawnee Inn embodies. “Torch Songs” is a term often used referring to sentimental love songs popular in the post-war era by composers George and Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter and Hoagie Carmichael will be performed by opera singers Kara Snyder and Jordan Lewis, who shift gears a bit, and will be accompanied by Skip Wilson on Grand Piano, Paul Rostock bass and Michael Stephans percussion. “I’m so Delaware River food & wine Shawnee Gallery excited that these superstar musicians are combining talents to make this a very, very special event musically and artistically.”
The Art
“Presenting Love” will be on location, featuring Andrei Protsouk. “Andrei’s images of American glamour and romance are so fitting for this event” says Griffin. Each table will feature a special and unique display: a mini installation by a different gallery artist. This event will be an exquisite presentation of the region’s best art, cuisine, and music. For people excited about living on the Delaware River, it is a not to be missed event!”
