Shawnee Introduces 2009 Golf Camps

SHAWNEE ON DELWARE, PENNSYLVANIA — By combining the teaching techniques of professional golf instructors with high-tech video swing analysis, and then blending them with numerous fun summer activities, Shawnee’s Tillinghast Golf Academy is again offering golf camps that target the development of each student, on and off the golf course. The 2009 camps are in July and August.

Junior Resident Camp (Jul. 19-23, 2009)
Tuition is $1,050 for boys and girls ages 10-18 years old and includes 5 days and 4 nights in The Shawnee Inn’s Delaware Lodge. In addition to daily regiments of instruction, students will play four guided rounds on Shawnee’s course. Extracurricular adventures include river adventures such as rafting, canoeing, and swimming. Daily games and contests also are part of the camp program.

Shawnee features three distinct nine-hole courses (Red, White and Blue), 24 of the holes which are located on a private island in the Delaware River. Tillinghast’s first-ever design was completed here in 1911 and served as the career springboard for one of the game’s greatest architects. The Tillinghast Golf Academy and the lighted Tillinghast Approach Course, a nine-hole, par three layout, accent the resort’s amenities for golfers.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is conveniently located 70 miles from New York City, 100 miles from Philadelphia, 150 miles from Albany, N.Y. and 200 miles from Washington, D.C. Three airports – Lehigh Valley International, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Newark International – all are within easy distance of the property.

The resort features three dining establishments: the golf-themed Sam Snead’s Tavern, River Room Restaurant and The Bistro.

Rich in the history of golf, Shawnee hosted the 1967 NCAA Championship, which was won by Hale Irwin playing for the University of Colorado. In the 1938 PGA Championship held at Shawnee, Paul Runyan defeated Sam Snead 8 and 7 in the title match during the tournament’s era of match play. Today, the resort hosts the Shawnee Open, a sanctioned point tournament for the Philadelphia Section of the PGA. The greats played here, so can you!
