Junior Ranger Family Fun Day – DWG Nat'l Rec Area

April 21, 2018

Bushkill, PA- Children of all ages are invited to bring their favorite adult to National Junior Ranger Family Fun Day at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on Saturday, April 21 from 1 pm to 4 pm.  The event will take place at Bushkill Meeting Center on Route 209 in Bushkill, PA.  The event is free and pen to the public.  Registration is not required.
“This year Junior Ranger Day coincides with World Fish Migration Day,” said Rainey McKenna, Outreach and Education Coordinator for the park.  “With the Middle Delaware Scenic and Recreational River at the heart of the park, we are excited to highlight and celebrate the park’s migratory fish as part of this year’s event.”
The three-hour event will feature two special presentations and a variety of hands-on activities including discovery stations, craft projects, and “fishing.” Delaware Valley Raptor Center will present Close Encounters with Birds of Prey at 1 pm, followed by a shad fishing talk and demonstration at 2 pm. Kids of all ages will also have the opportunity to earn a Junior Ranger badge.  Delaware Water Gap’s Junior Ranger program is a year-round way for children and families to experience and enjoy the park. Children can complete the Delaware Water Gap Junior Ranger activity booklet, attend a ranger program, and explore park nature trails to earn a Junior Ranger badge.
Volunteer Opportunity:  For those who would like to get out and volunteer on Earth Day weekend, come help the park celebrate by cleaning up a portion of the McDade Trail on Saturday, April 21 from 9 am until noon.   “The larger trees and debris from March’s winter storms have been removed but we need your rakes and brooms to sweep it clean so that it is ready it for biking and hiking in the upcoming months,” announced Jennifer Kavanaugh, the park’s Partnership and Volunteer Program Coordinator.  Participants may choose their favorite portion of the trail to work on either by themselves or with friends and family.  Pre-registration is required. To register or for more information, email Jennifer_kavanaugh@nps.gov.   Volunteers are encouraged to attend the Family Fun Day programs at 1 pm to receive a special thank you gift for their service.
