2nd Consecutive Year Winner of the “Save Our Planet Award”

The Shawnee Inn was fortunate to receive one of the five awards that were given on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 by the Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce. Each year the Environmental Committee of the Chamber presents what they refer to as the “Save Our Planet Award”. This award is given to five different types of efforts: Personal Achievement, Business, Government, Non-profit and Travel & Tourism. This year, the Inn was honored for the second year in a row, with the “Save Our Planet Award” for efforts in the Travel & Tourism sector.

In March of 2005, Rob Way, Shawnee’s General Manager, made a goal to become the first resort in the Poconos to launch an effective recycling program.  As many of you know, commercial recycling demands a lot of time and work in the state of Pennsylvania, as it is not as simple as placing a bin on the front step of your business or home.  The Inn recently purchased a 10 yard container to be used as a garbage disposal for cardboard. The container is picked up twice a week in order to recycle the estimated 2.17 tons of cardboard that it collects each month. The Shawnee Inn has also taken the initiative to participate in Waste Management Inc.’s Commingle Recycling Program; becoming one of the first Pocono resorts to do so.  This program promotes the use of recycling receptacles, of which the Inn currently has six. These 96-gallon bins collect over 1 ton of recyclable items per month and are picked up once a week.  Aside from recycling, we have also continued our water conservancy and Audubon programs, striving to maintain an environmentally friendly property. We are very pleased with the progress we have made thus far, and look forward to improving and continuing our environmental programs here at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
