Pro-Am Sunday,
July 24th followed by the Shawnee
Open 10:00am - 5:00pm (shotgun
start). Pro-Am PGA Golf Tournament
on Monday and Tuesday 9am - 4:30
(tee times) Shawnee Open.
The place is The
Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, Fred
Waring is on the porch with his
Pennsylvanians and the last caddie
went out for the day. Jackie Gleason
is taking a lesson at The Swing's
the Thing Golf School and Arnold
Palmer is talking to a beautiful
young girl named Winnie that he
just met on the front porch of
the Inn. Dwight Eisenhower is on
the ninth hole still trying to
make a treacherous downhill putt
and if you can remember this, then
yu remember The Shawnee Open, one
of the oldest PGA events in the
state if not in the country.
The Shawnee Open began in 1912,
and since then six U.S Open Champions
have won the tournament: Fred
McLeod, John McDermott, Walter
Hagen, James Barnes, Johnny Farrell,
and Lawson Little. Former PGA President
Jack Connelly also won the event
in 1979. Over ninety golf seasons
have come and gone since the
first Shawnee Open, but the tournament
lives on! The Shawnee Inn and
Golf Resort is pleased to announce
that this year, the Shawnee Open
PGA Tournament will be held on
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (July
24, 25, 26). The Gregory Moyer
Defibrillator Fund will be this
year’s
benefiting charity from the Shawnee
Open. On Sunday, the Inn will host the Shawnee Pro-Am, followed on Monday
and Tuesday by the Shawnee Open.
This year boasts a prize purse
reaching close to $10,000.00, making
this event prominent in the region.
The Shawnee Open will be held
at the Shawnee Inn’s signature
island course on the Delaware River.
Spectators will see professional golfers from the Philadelphia Section of the
PGA compete in this classic tournament. Your presence as a spectator will help
make this event a huge success, and admission is free!
The Gregory Moyer Defibrillator Fund has touched all of
our hearts in particular because Greg was a friend and neighbor
of Shawnee. This year's tournament organizers have put together
a dedicated campaign and are hoping to raise $2,600.00.
History behind the benefiting charity…
Gregory W. Moyer was a fifteen year-old sophomore playing basketball
for Notre Dame High School in East
Stroudsburg Pennsylvania on the night he died, December 2, 2000.
Notre Dame was playing a game in a brand new, multi-million dollar
school. The school did not have a defibrillator and was far removed
from emergency medical services. Greg walked off the court at
half-time. Two minutes later, he collapsed on the floor of the
locker room from cardiac arrest brought on by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
He died shortly thereafter. A nurse from the emergency room urged
his devastated parents to do something
to make sure other families were spared the tragedy ours had
suffered. The nurse suggested starting a fund to buy defibrillators
for local schools. Thus, his parents started Greg’s Fund
to raise enough money to donate AEDs to the five high schools
in Monroe county (Pennsylvania). By the time of Greg’s
funeral, enough money had already been donated to purchase seven
AEDs. The Shawnee Inn is privileged to be able to collaborate
to such a near and dear cause that took their young friend and
neighbor almost five years ago.
The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort's Golf Professional, Joe Manley,
confidently says, "We are happy
to continue this long tradition
with the best playing professionals
in the Philadelphia Section PGA
competing and also be able to help
a great cause with the Pro-Am."
Past and current PGA Tour and Senior
Tour participants will be playing
in the event. Joe Manley and his
staff are eager to see new faces
in the crowd and encourage spectators
to come see some great shot-making
by the Pro's!
For more tournament information, contact Joe Manley at (570)
424-4050, ext. 1425. The resort
is comfortably nestled at 1 River
Road in Shawnee On Delaware, Pennsylvania.
