GOLF
COURSE ANNOUNCES THE OPENING
OF 18 HOLES TO PUBLIC
Shawnee
announced that 18 of
their 27 holes of championship
golf will open for the season
this Saturday, May 14, 2005. Despite the many
precautionary measures taken,
the Northeast flooding that
occurred in early April left
its mark on Shawnee’s
island golf course. To combat this damage, the grounds
crew swelled from 15 to 35
employees in order to expedite
the clean-up process. Through
the support of the community
and the tireless spirit of
our employees, the course
will open earlier that planned.
To assist us in reopening the course, Shawnee
hired a professional USGA (United States Golf Association)
agronomist to get ready for the season. Joseph Manley, New Head Golf Professional,
shares that “the agronomist assisted us with a plan
of action to get the course back to par condition”.
He also adds, “golf is rich in history here at Shawnee,
and we are eager to continue the tradition during this 94th
year in operation”.
With the holes that will be open, the course will function
as a par 72 course. Manley also went on to say, “We
really would like to give a warm thank you to all of our neighboring
golf courses that helped accommodate our golf groups during
the intense clean-up process”. Steve Taggart, Chief Grounds Superintendent,
is optimistic that the remaining 9 holes will be open for
play by mid June. Taggart said, “We are one of the
few courses in the area with 27 Championship holes–
this is partially the reason for the time it has taken us
to open the course”.
The Northeast Spring flood delayed the opening of the
course after dumping three inches of silt over most of the
greens and also leaving behind a lot of debris.
This week’s forecast of sunshine will help aid
the season opening on
Saturday.
If you have not taken
a ride to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in the past couple
of months, you should. Upon your arrival, you will quickly
notice all of the construction and refurbishing work being
done. As you pull in through the main entrance, your
attention will be directed to the Tillinghast Golf Academy
on your left, which is open for golf lessons by two top-notch
instructors, Jim Miller, Head PGA Director of Instruction,
and Connie Chilemi, LPGA Professional. The golf school
currently includes three practice holes, which will eventually
be completed into a 9-hole short game facility. Located
next to the driving range, the remaining 6 holes are being
shaped and designed to provide you with an extremely well
rounded practice facility, perfect for golfers of all ages
and levels. These facilities have been added to compliment
our historic course and Inn.
