SAM SNEAD'S TAVERN PLAYS HOST TO WELL-KNOWN LOCAL MUSICIAN
Built on the tradition of delicious food and good service, Sam Snead’s Tavern is proud to include live entertainment from local musicians for the entertainment of its guests. The Poconos is an area jam-packed with musical talent, and Sam Snead’s is very pleased to showcase the skills of many of these artists. Each and every Thursday and Friday evening, sweet sounds are sure to be heard coming from the lower level of Snead’s from musicians such as Bill Rooth, Kate & CJ, Randy Bigness, and Diane & Willie. Although each of Snead’s performers provides for a night of pure entertainment, one in particular is known for his work in the music community.
A resident of the Poconos since 1998, Jimmy Brown is the Music Editor of Guitar World magazine in New York City, as well as its sister publications: Guitar World Acoustic, Bass Guitar, and Guitar Legends.
A dream job for Jimmy, this position
allows him to apply his formal musical training, professional performance
and teaching experience, and passion for a variety of guitar styles.
In addition to being responsible for all the guitar and bass sheet
music transcriptions and numerous instructional articles the magazines
feature in each issue, Jimmy also
writes his own columns – “Licks That Kill” in Guitar World and “Unplugging” in Guitar World Acoustic.
Aside from writing, Jimmy is proud
to be featured in the magazine’s
recently launched CD-ROM instructional
videos, along with several other celebrity rock guitarists.
As a great
benefit of his position with the magazine, Jimmy has had some
unforgettable opportunities to interview and jam with many of
his life-long musical heroes. His most memorable experience was
a trip to London to hang out with John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin
for several hours in his state-of-the-art recording studio. Other
musical greats that Jimmy has had the opportunity to interview
include Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Yes’ Steve
Howe and Kirk Hammett of Metallica.
Shortly
after moving to the Poconos seven years ago, Jimmy placed an
ad in the local paper offering his services as a guitar teacher.
In no time Jimmy had dozens of students and explains, “this
was great because it really helped put me in close touch with
the needs and interests of Guitar World’s typical
readers”. A little later, Jimmy formed a rock band with
his wife and played all over the Stroudsburg area for a few years.
Because performing is his greater passion, Jimmy decided to cut
back on teaching and focus mainly on his playing. He now works
steadily with a wedding band in the North Jersey area and performs
solo shows closer to home.
Contrary to his original
goals, Jimmy’s solo act has really taken on a life of its own. Jamming away on his electric guitar, Jimmy has learned to incorporate a tambourine into his act by playing it with his foot. He has been told that the tambourine greatly enhances the rhythm of what he is playing and singing. When it comes to his play list, Jimmy is quite versatile, playing mostly classic rock and pop favorites, plus some newer hits and a little blues, Motown and old-school country. At any of his performances it is not uncommon to be entertained with music ranging from the Beatles, Eagles, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Who to Dave Matthews, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stone Temple Pilots to Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra. And although he has his favorites, Jimmy carefully chooses the songs he performs based on the atmosphere and the mood of his audience. “I study people’s faces and reactions and try to play the songs I think they will like and appreciate,” Jimmy explains, and then adds, “of course, requests are always welcome and help to steer you in the right direction.” Regardless of musical preference, members of Jimmy’s
audiences can always be heard whistling one of their favorite
tunes on their way out the door.
For all music lovers out there or
anyone just looking to be entertained, Jimmy Brown can be heard
at Sam Snead’s Tavern during some of the entertainment nights (Thu, Fri, and/or Sat). His next scheduled performance will be Thursday, April 14th from 9pm – Midnight.
Jimmy can also be found on www.guitarworld.com demonstrating some of the lessons that are featured in the magazine.
