MASS APPEAL at Shawnee Playhouse
Shawnee Playhouse rings in the New Year this January, presenting
MASS APPEAL, a contemporary drama by Bill C. Davis, produced
by Moonstone Theater.
MASS APPEAL is a fascinating, provocative show filled with
humor, depth, and contemporary relevance.
Two priests clash in the generation gap. Through laughter and
tears each teaches the other the true meaning of faith. This
is the sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant story of Father
Timothy Farley, whose secure and well-ordered life is turned
upside down when Mark Dolson, a young and rebellious seminarian,
comes under his tutelage. The elder priest is forced to defend
the traditional teachings of the church against the seminarian's
more modern view of sermons, consolations, women’s rights,
converts, alcoholism, and sexuality in the priesthood. This two-character
play in many ways is more timely and more vital today than when
it was written in the early 1980s.

MASS APPEAL has been performed to critical acclaim for more
than twenty years:
"The result is a work that happily defies our pat
expectations. MASS APPEAL, it turns out, is not preoccupied
with generational or theological conflict; nor is it exclusively
about the Roman Catholic Church. By letting his characters
grow and change, Mr. Davis has written a play that lives
up to the promise of its title - a tender comedy about the
meaning and power of both secular and religious love."
