SHAWNEE
TRAINS STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Wednesday
December 5, 2007 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) –
The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will train two students from
the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 (CIU 20) to work in housekeeping
departments. The individuals are members of Colonial’s
non-paid tract transition program.
CIU 20, through the transition
program, coordinates activities for students with disabilities
that promote movement from school to post-school arenas. These
activities relate to post-secondary education, vocational
training, employment, and independent living. Simply stated,
it is the “bridge” between school age programs
and adult life.
While Shawnee gains hard
working and dedicated employees, the students gain wholly
applicable life experiences. In many instances wages are earned
that assist in attaining the goal of becoming an independent
adult. Also, the students are able to participate productively
in society, gaining new life skills that support a positive
step to face the real world.
For those businesses that
are interested in the transition program, there are a lot
of positive aspects to take into consideration. The students
are thoroughly screened, so employers save time and money
on recruiting qualified individuals. Employers become part
of an important school-business partnership that assures students
a successful transition from school to adult life. Finally,
businesses that become involved with CIU 20’s transition
program strengthen the community by increasing the probability
that young adults with disabilities will become productive
members of society and assets to the local work force.
If you have any questions
about CIU 20 or if your business would like to participate
