Presenting:
A Barbershop Extravaganza
Tuesday,
August 29th @
7pm
Shawnee on
Delaware, Pennsylvania --
The Shawnee
Community Concert Series will host
the Chorus of the Poconos - A 10-Member
Barbershop Extravaganza - performing
traditional old-time barber shop
songs. The show starts at 7 pm. on
Tuesday, August 29th.
About the
performer:
The
Chorus of the Poconos has been performing for the past 45 years,
with Tom Salmon directing the ensemble for the past five. The
group consists of ten sharp singers from local areas ranging
from Bushkill to Blakeslee. From
all walks of life, these performers each have something in common:
they love to sing! Barbershop harmony, as codified during
the barbershop revival era (1940s), is a style of unaccompanied
vocal music characterized by consonant four-part chords in a
predominantly homophonic texture. Each of the four parts has
its own role: the lead sings the melody, with the tenor harmonizing
above, the bass singing the lowest notes, and the baritone completing
the chord. This
style of music, as performed by this fun and upbeat group, is
sure to leave the audience entertained and clapping to the beat
of every song.
About the Concerts:
Seven years ago, Charlie
and Virginia Kirkwood (owners of the Shawnee Inn and the Shawnee
Institute) organized this series of concerts as a way to give
back to the community. Boasting a wide variety of musical entertainment,
the concerts have become quite popular over the years for visitors
and local residents alike. An
attendance of 300 people is not uncommon, and well over 400 gather
for the Fourth of July patriotic celebration.
The series of lawn concerts typically
consists of 13 shows, and, because the Poconos is such a musically
talented community, it is not hard to find performers. Volunteering
their talents, these artists
perform a wide range of music, including jazz, big band, country,
polka, Broadway, oldies, folk, gospel, acoustic, patriotic and
more. Each
one as entertaining as the next,
these shows are fun for audiences of all ages. Each concert is free of charge and donations
to the performers are accepted
in order to show appreciation for their time and talents. Shows
run rain or shine at the front
lawn of the Shawnee Inn and in
the event of inclement weather
they are moved to the Inn’s
lobby or veranda.
The concert series was made possible by the partnership of the
Shawnee Institute Ltd and The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
