Shawnee’s Determination is Similar to “Rocky”
Shawnee on Delaware, PA – The
Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort hosted
an invitational event to show off the renovations and "new" layout.
The event took place on Tuesday, May 30. The 170 attendees consisted
of local business, state officials, judges, attorneys, bankers
and local residents. Even though the Inn was only closed for 5
days after the previous flood (April 2005), the Inn continued to
do additional renovations throughout the last year on other areas
of the Inn that were not effected by the flood.
The affair started at 5pm and it was set up as a self-guided
progressive cocktail and dinner party. Upon arrival, guests received
an itinerary with the different areas of the Inn to stop in. The
locations were accompanied by delicious fare created by resort
Executive Chef, Carl Davis, and also some specialties from the
well-known Sam Snead’s Tavern. Themed cocktail bars and exceptional
entertainment was also designated throughout the tour.
A year after the flood, Rob Howell, Director of Sales, states
that “the road to reconstruction has been successful and
it is exciting to share these changes with the community that has
been so supportive of us.” As people strolled through the
Inn’s 14,000 square feet of renovated meeting and event space,
they also got a chance to see a Power Point of before and after
photos of flood damage and renovations. The Palmer Room was set
up with state of the art Video Conferencing. Added stops on the
tour were sleeping rooms, fitness center, business center, expanded
golf shop, indoor pool and approach course. Most guests took a
drive on the new electric golf carts to Shawnee Island to the rejuvenated
course, which was also affected by the floods.
The evening ended with speeches from the Kirkwood Family. Mr.
Kirkwood shared that they “have learned from the flood experience
- advanced waterproof dens glass (similar to drywall) have been
installed in the ground floor. These walls have already been put
to the test because they survived the flood of April 2005”.
Other engineering techniques that have been implemented were to
house generators and network computers permanently on the second
level of the Inn. Bob Uguccioni, PMVB President, spoke and remarked
that Shawnee has been very clever in the reconstruction and efforts
to prepare for future flooding. He even went on to compare the
resort to “Rocky” the movie. The Inn is nestled in
a 100-year flood plain so if Mother Nature holds her word, the
resort should be free of any floods for the next 200 years to come
but they are taking the precautious steps in the event of.
A special thanks goes out to those
who attended for their support in the “new” Shawnee.
