The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort Adopts River Road

Shawnee Embraces Earth Day

Thursday, April 11, 2013 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) – The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will officially adopt River Road, located in Smithfield Township, Pennsylvania. The road adoption will take place on April 20th, 2013 as a celebratory milestone for the 10th Annual River Road Clean-Up that the resort organizes.

The unveiling of the adoption signs, provided by the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful program through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, will take place during the 10th Annual River Road Cleanup beginning at 8:00 am and concluding 11:30 am. The River Road Cleanup will be followed by an appreciation luncheon at The Gem and Keystone Brewpub for the volunteers.

Adopting River Road requires The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort to organize efforts to remove litter from River Road twice each calendar year. As it stands, Shawnee has been organizing the River Road Cleanup in April for nine consecutive years. The opportunity to schedule a second cleanup each year will ensure that Shawnee’s roadways are free of unsightly and environmentally harmful waste.

“It was an easy decision to commit The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort to adopting River Road,” said Rob Howell, General Manager of the resort. “So much of what makes Shawnee so special is our outdoor setting. Ensuring that we keep Shawnee beautiful is extremely important to everyone who visits and lives here.”

For ten straight years, Shawnee has worked in partnership with PENNDOT’s Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day. Community members along with Shawnee employees have shared the benefit of knowing their efforts have positively impacted the environment along river road. Local sponsors of the event are: The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, The Shawnee Institute LTD, The Gem and Keystone Brewpub, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Each year, over a hundred of bags of waste is removed from River Road restoring the traveled roadway to its scenic roots. In an effort to ensure the safety of the volunteers, township officials close a portion of River Road for the morning. By doing so, the River Road Cleanup makes for a very good family activity.

Registration is open to the resort guest and local community. Shawnee already has over 150 volunteers registered for the event.

Registration is from 8:00 am – 8:30 am at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort – follow signs to the River Sanctuary. At registration, volunteers will be given garbage bags, gloves, a safety vest, and safety instructions. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
