SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, Pa. (May 6, 2010) … Robert Howell, General Manger of The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, received the General Manager of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Tourism & Lodging Association (PTLA) at its recent Spirit of Hospitality Awards Reception and Dinner.
Howell, who most recently joined the staff at Shawnee in 2003, was selected for an honor that annually goes to a general manager who demonstrates professionalism in operating a property and takes a leadership role in the industry by actively participating in association, community, or industry programs.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized by my peers,” said Howell, who became General Manager at Shawnee in 2006, after serving as Director of Marketing and Sales. “But this also is an honor for the dedicated staff and exceptional guest service at Shawnee Inn, which is a very special place.”
Howell, who has been in the hospitality industry nearly 30 years, has played a significant role in the “Shawnee Renaissance.” Through his commitment, the iconic resort on the Delaware River, which is celebrating its 100th golf season in 2010, has re-emerged as one of the nation’s premier destinations.
Creativity is a strong suit of Howell, who has extensive theatre experience, most recently as a producer and director of his original work at the historic Shawnee Playhouse. More examples of Howell’s creative thinking can be spotted throughout the property, such as his idea to offer guests blankets by the veranda and replacing the customary mint chocolate on the pillow with a freshly made “trail mix” cookie.
Howell also has reached out to the community, spearheading a series of free dinners available to those in need. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Tourism and Lodging Association and The Sherman Theater and is a member of the Pocono Arts Council, Rotary International and the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
