Are You Winter Ready?
It is a new year and with it comes the first steps towards “making good” on your various resolutions. The trends in resolutions have always favored improved wellness and let’s face it – taking control of your health in winter is hard. People tend to relegate themselves to stuffy indoor workouts and stationary gym equipment. It is no surprise that many give up on their resolutions before they ever really start.
So where does that leave you if you’re struggling to reach your new fitness goals? At Shawnee, we embrace everything outdoors – even in the cold winter months. Can you blame us? We benefit by being nestled in a valley surrounded by Shawnee Mountain and the 70,000 acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It is much easier to expand your active repertoire at Shawnee because of all of the wonderful opportunities to take in nature.
Shawnee Mountain is our neighbor and they offer skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing. What’s better is that they are nationally recognized for their family friendly programs. So even if you’ve never skied before (especially so), Shawnee Mountain is an option for a whole day’s worth of a workout.
The Shawnee Inn’s property, though surrounded by the Pocono Mountains is relatively flat and perfect for scenic photography, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, and of course an inspiring winter run.
The McDade and Appalachian Trails are open all four seasons and available for invigorating winter hikes. Shawnee’s recreation staff leads guided hikes on trails tailored for people of all fitness levels. Guided hikes are complimentary for Shawnee Inn guests.
So what do you need to be winter ready?
1. First and foremost you need to be comfortable! Make sure you have all of the proper equipment to ensure that winter’s weather doesn’t inhibit your progress. There is nothing more disheartening than knowing a painfully cold workout is what’s in store.
2. You have to make the most of your time. Pennsylvania has about nine hours of daylight in the winter so if you need to see or be seen, taking advantage of the few hours of sun is crucial! Next to being cold, catching the sun can be the next greatest obstacle to overcome.
3. You need to be ready to experience exercise in a whole new light. I know it may be a strange new world to some, but exercising can be fun! The real trick to succeeding in wellness goals is making them part of your lifestyle. If it’s painful, you won’t stick to it. That makes winter fitness even more difficult to achieve. Find something fun, like skiing or hiking to get your heart pumping, you won’t even know that you’re working out.
